Brightpoint is celebrating Black History Month with various events that are free and open to students, faculty, and staff.* We encourage you to attend these engaging and moving events.

Film Screening: Wicked
February 5

Watch the musical fantasy film Wicked with your peers. Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, a young woman who is misunderstood because of her green skin, and the unlikely friendship she forms with Glinda, a student obsessed with popularity.
Field Trip: Virginia Black History Museum & Lunch in Jackson Ward

Come tour the Richmond Black History Museum and enjoy lunch in historic Jackson Ward.
This event is sponsored by Brightpoint Student Activities. Student Activities will cover the cost of the tour and lunch for the day. Lunch will take place at a local black-owned restaurant in historic Jackson Ward, where the group will indulge in the wonderful taste of "soul food."
The field trip is limited to 25 students, and students must provide their own transportation.

Ain’t I A Woman?

Join us for Ain't I A Woman?, a one-woman play on the extraordinary life of women’s rights advocate and abolitionist Sojourner Truth. Actress Charmaine Crowell-White will return to The Lynn Theatre for this amazing show. Theatre doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the play will begin at 1:00 pm.

Brightpoint’s own writer, director, and Professor Foster Solomon will bring his one-woman play on the life of Ms. Maggie Walker, entitled The Penny Executive, to The Lynn Theatre. The Penny Executive tells the story of Ms. Walker’s life, including how she became the first female president of a U.S. bank. Theatre doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the play will start at 7:00 p.m.

Black Nurses in White: An Historical Account of Black Americans in Nursing

Led by Dr. Vivienne Pierce McDaniel, this presentation explores the history of nursing in the United States and abroad through the lens of an equity-minded educator, health equity ambassador, and Mary Eliza Mahoney historian.
