In honor of those who have served in the United States Armed Services, we are holding a Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11 at 11:00 a.m. The ceremony will occur on our Chester Campus in the Nicholas Center and is open to the public. We invite all who can attend to join us in expressing gratitude for our nation’s veterans and their families.

The Ceremony: Honoring Those Who Have Served

Our ceremony will begin with welcome remarks and performances. After President Bill Fiege shares his opening statement, we will hear from our keynote speakers, SFC(R) Halimah Shepherd-Crawford and Dr. Shauna Mayo, both U.S. Army Veterans and members of the Brightpoint community. Halimah is a student and president of our Student Veterans Organization, while Shauna is the Coordinator of Professional Development and Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Dr. Jennifer Sager Gentry, vice chancellor for institutional advancement at the Virginia Community College System, will present awards from the Greer Saunders’ Student Success Fund. The Greer Saunders’ Student Success Fund is for students in a Virginia Community College who are active-duty, reservist, honorably discharged, or veterans of a United States military service branch. Three Brightpoint students will be announced as recipients.

At the end of the ceremony, we welcome attendees to step outside as we partake in a memorial tree planting to honor our veterans. The tree was a donation from Mr. Carl Duffey of the James River Rotary Club and the Brightpoint Community College Student Veterans Association.
