John Tyler Community College Foundation Awards more than $253,000 in Scholarships
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, 174 students received scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year.

CHESTER and MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Scholarships help open doors to education and assist students in achieving their goals. They ease stresses caused by financial challenges; help working students who want to spend more time focused on college; and provide encouragement, by showing students there is a supportive community that believes in them and wants them to succeed. This academic year, the John Tyler Community College Foundation (Tyler Foundation) awarded $253,112.72 in scholarships to 174 students. The Tyler Foundation scholarship program, made possible through the generous support of individuals, businesses and organizations, includes need- and achievement-based scholarships, as well as scholarships designated for students in specific majors or from certain geographic areas.
This year’s scholarship recipients and donors were honored March 4, 2022, at a virtual celebration event, which highlighted the impact scholarships have on students’ lives. During the event, Tyler alumnus Geovany Chavarria, a past scholarship recipient, spoke about the lasting impact the scholarship program had on him. Attendees also heard from current scholarship recipients Ishan Chaudhary, an information technology student; Shelby Lail, a technical studies student; and Jonathan Ryder, who graduated in December with a degree in health sciences. The students shared their personal journeys and talked about the important role their scholarships are having on their goals.
As students balance jobs, family responsibilities and their classwork, while also navigating the pandemic, the support provided by these scholarships is extremely important. “The generosity of our donors continues to be critical as students face the challenges of pursing their education during a pandemic,” says Rachel Biundo, vice president of institutional advancement. “We know education creates pathways to jobs, which is vital as our economy recovers and area employers search for skilled workers. The financial support scholarships provide can make a difference in a student's ability to attend college, complete their major, and achieve their goals.”

The JTCC Foundation secures resources that provide scholarships for students; fund academic programs, student support services, capital projects, and renovations to modernize classrooms and labs; and stimulate innovation within the college faculty and staff. This work ensures the college continues its pledge of providing academic excellence to students while expanding the services it offers to meet the community’s workforce requirements. Since most of the College’s graduates live and work in the area, gifts to the Foundation are an investment in both students and the community.
John Tyler Community College, which is becoming Brightpoint Community College on July 1, 2022, offers more than 75 majors that provide pathways to careers in high-demand fields; transfer opportunities to four-year colleges and universities; and industry credentials and licensures. The college, with campuses in Chester and Midlothian, online classes, and off-campus classrooms, served more than 12,790 students during the 2020-21 academic year. . It also assisted approximately 5,700 learners, including more than 2,700 job seekers, through its workforce development division, Community College Workforce Alliance, a partnership between Tyler and Reynolds community colleges.
