If you are a citizen age 60 or older, you are encouraged to take advantage of free tuition provided by the Senior Citizens Higher Education Act of 1974. The Act provides two kinds of tuition assistance:

Credit Classes

Virginia residents who are 60 and above can take credit classes at the college free of charge. To be eligible for free tuition and fees for credit classes, part-time or full-time, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be 60 years of age or older
  2. Be a legal resident of Virginia
  3. Had a taxable income not exceeding $23,850 for state income tax purposes for the year preceding the year in which enrollment is sought.
  4. Be admitted to the college as an in-state student.

Audit Classes

Virginia residents who are 60 and above may audit credit classes free of charge. To be eligible for free tuition for audit of credit classes you must meet the following criteria and present documentation for verification:

  1. Be 60 years of age or older
  2. Be a legal resident of Virginia
  3. Be admitted to the college as an in-state student (to audit)

Senior citizens (for credit and audit) may enroll on the first day of their class provided they have an application on file with the college. Enrollment must be done in person at the Admissions & Records Office, as additional paperwork is required to receive the tuition waiver. All classes must achieve a minimum enrollment of tuition-paying students in order for senior citizens to enroll in the class.
