Brightpoint Students Apply AI to Help Empower Local Nonprofit
When artificial intelligence meets community focus, technology transforms from an abstract concept into a tool for real-world change. That's just what happened at the recent AI Hackathon for Good at Brightpoint's Midlothian Campus.
When artificial intelligence meets community focus, technology transforms from an abstract concept into a tool for real-world change.
That potential came to life at Brightpoint Community College’s Midlothian Campus during the two-day AI for Good Hackathon, hosted in partnership with Accelerated Visions and local nonprofit Boys to Men Mentoring Virginia, in September 2026.
Over 48 hours, 22 Brightpoint students stepped beyond traditional classroom assignments to solve a complex, client-centered operational challenge: helping Boys to Men Mentoring Virginia better structure, interpret, and leverage its organizational data.
Moving Beyond the Classroom: The Hackathon Experience
Rather than working through hypothetical exercises, participants worked directly with synthetic datasets modeled after Boys to Men’s actual operational and reporting metrics. Student teams were tasked with designing solutions that could streamline the nonprofit's administrative burden and unlock deeper insights from their program data.
Working in collaborative sprint teams, students integrated artificial intelligence, data analytics, problem-solving, and professional communication to deliver immediate value for Boys to Men through:
- Data Standardization: Cleaned, formatted, and structured disjointed data fields to establish consistent baseline reporting.
- Process Automation: Built automated workflows designed to reduce repetitive manual data entry for nonprofit staff.
- Scalable Frameworks: Developed repeatable AI tools and reporting models that Boys to Men can easily apply to their live data moving forward.
- Executive Presentations: Formulated and presented actionable recommendations directly to organizational leaders and industry mentors.
The experience offered students a rare look into client-centered consulting, demonstrating how high-demand technical capabilities intersect with essential workplace skills like adaptability, teamwork, and executive presentation.
Strategic Collaboration Creates Meaningful Change
The AI for Good Hackathon highlights the unique power of community college partnerships. By pairing Brightpoint’s motivated talent pipeline with Accelerated Visions’ industry expertise and Boys to Men’s community focus, the event provided students with portfolio-ready experience while leaving a local nonprofit with functional frameworks to expand its reach.
As industries continue to adopt artificial intelligence, Brightpoint remains committed to delivering experiential learning opportunities that prepare students for today’s evolving workforce—one real challenge at a time.
