Prepare to Transfer

Starting at Brightpoint helps you build a strong educational foundation for transferring to a four-year college or university, while also keeping more money in your pocket.

Transfer Planning

We make transferring easy with guaranteed admissions agreements, transfer grants, professional advisors, and faculty advisors in your major who can help you choose the right Brightpoint courses to set you up for success.

Students who want to complete their freshman and sophomore years of college work at Brightpoint and then transfer to a four-year college or university typically pursue one of three types of degrees:

Traditional Transfer Degrees

  • Associate of Arts (AA)
  • Associate of Fine Arts (AFA)
  • Associate of Science (AS)

Brightpoint’s Applied Degrees

  • Associate of Applied Arts (AAA)
  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS)

The applied degrees are not designed to transfer; however, some applied programs do offer transfer opportunities. Use our major finder to explore your options and consult with a Navigator or Help Hub advisor to choose the right degree for you.

Guaranteed Admissions Agreements

Brightpoint graduates are guaranteed admission to over 35 colleges and universities provided they meet course, GPA and other requirements.

Transfer Virginia

Transfer Virginia provides transparent, accessible, consistent, and current information to students. Search majors, find out where your intended major will transfer, where and how your courses will transfer, and determine how much it will cost. Resources are available to assist you with academic, enrollment, financial, and transfer planning. Research, plan, and organize your college and transfer journey with Transfer VA.

Once you are placed in a major, work with your faculty advisor to ensure you stay on track with your degree path. Use the VCCS transfer planning guide and resources available through Transfer Virginia in consultation with your faculty advisor to plan out your coursework and take the necessary steps for transfer.

Transfer Grants

  • Brightpoint graduates can receive up to $3,000 annually through the Virginia Two-Year College Transfer Grant. Eligible students must have a 3.0 GPA, transfer to a participating four-year school, meet certain financial criteria and be enrolled as a full-time student.
  • The Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant Program is for Virginia residents who attend accredited private, nonprofit colleges and universities in Virginia for other than religious training or theological education. Applications can be retrieved from the financial aid office of the private institution you plan to attend.

NEXT STEP VCU

Apply for dual admission to Brightpoint and VCU through NEXT STEP VCU. You'll get a VCU advisor, ID card, and email address; invitations to special events; and access to the VCU library and select campus resources. Connect with other prospective and current VCU students, so you feel a part of the VCU community. Upon successful completion of the associate degree, the regular transfer application and fee will be waived.

Mason ADVANCE

Apply for dual admission to Brightpoint and George Mason University through Mason ADVANCE. You'll have access to specialized advising support, tuition assistance, and the full Mason student experience from day one.

Mellon Pathways Program

Funding for the Mellon Pathways Program ended on May 31, 2026. This program has provided a community of support for hundreds of community college transfer students, and we are proud of the work we have completed in the last six years. We are continually thankful for the support from the Mellon Foundation, the Virginia Community College System and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Although funding for the Mellon Pathways Program has ended, the Virginia Community College System has been awarded funding from the Mellon Foundation to launch the Mellon Faculty Research Fellows Initiative which will provide research opportunities for community college faculty and student mentees across the state. We are thankful to the Mellon Foundation for their continual support of community colleges, their students and faculty.

  • Are you transferring to Brightpoint from another college?  Complete the Transfer Credit Request form. Our Admissions and Records Office will evaluate your courses and see how they will satisfy your course requirements for your major.

To be eligible to transfer credits, you must:

    • Officially declare a major
    • Submit official transcripts to the Admissions & Records Office.
      • Official transcripts may be sent to Brightpoint electronically or by mail from the issuing institution or through Parchment. They may be delivered in person by the student but must be in an envelope sealed by the issuing institution. Transcripts can be mailed to:
        • Brightpoint Community College
        • Admissions and Records
        • 13101 Route 1
        • Chester, Virginia 23831
    • Submit a Transfer Credit Request Form
  • Brightpoint is also a smart choice for students who want to take courses to transfer back to their home school. Before registering, make sure you have a Transient Form on file with Brightpoint’s Admissions and Records Office.
