Big changes are coming to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application for the 2024-2025 aid year!
The FAFSA Simplification Act was passed by Congress in 2020 and represents a significant overhaul of the processes and systems used to award federal student aid. This includes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, the need analysis that determines federal aid eligibility, changes in terminology, and many policies and procedures for schools that participate in federal student aid programs.
2024-2025 FAFSA Availability
Historically, the FAFSA has been available beginning October 1 each year. However, because of significant changes to the application and the rebuild of the FAFSA processing system, the 2024-2025 FAFSA became available December 31, 2023.
While students are able to complete the FAFSA starting December 31, 2023, the Department of Education projects that Brightpoint will not start to receive those FAFSAs until mid-March 2024. This is a change from the typical 3-5 business days that it normally takes for colleges to receive the FAFSA.
The new FAFSA site has had intermittent technical issues. If you experience technical issues while using the site, the Department of Education recommends trying again in 24-48 hours. You can also contact the FAFSA helpline directly at 1-800-433-3243 or by email at studentaid@ed.gov to report issues and receive assistance.

How Can I Get Help with the 2024-2025 FAFSA?
Glad you asked! Brightpoint is planning to host a number of events (both in-person and virtual) to walk you through all of the important changes and assist you with FAFSA completion.
Each month, Financial Aid staff offer virtual office hours and host FAFSA Friday events. FAFSA Night is currently planned for February and April. During virtual office hours, FAFSA Friday events, and FAFSA Night, students can get personalized assistance with completing the FAFSA and applying for financial aid.
The Help Hub is also available to help with FAFSA questions and completion.
