Historian Audrey Ross Presents: "History of the Midlothian African American Community"
Historian Audrey Ross will present on the history of the Midlothian African American community, with a focus on enslavement, community formation, and the contributions of local leaders, educators, entrepreneurs, and activists. In recognition of the upcoming 180th anniversary of First Baptist Church, Ms. Ross will also discuss the church’s enduring role in the community. The presentation will be followed by a visit to the Art Gallery to view Ms. Ross’ exhibition, "Reflections: A Time for Recognition." The exhibit will highlight the rich history of our local African American community from enslavement to the present. This includes the Midlothian mines (a local landmark), which produced the first commercial coal in North America. Historical pictures, vintage clothing, and tools from early African-American-owned businesses are just a few of the treats in store for visitors.
